Good morning Vietnam! I love the smell of umm… baguettes and fresh coffee in the morning. It was a great surprise to find it all over Saigon. The French got a few things right here before they were kicked out.
We really loved the street food particularly the classic Pho Bo – beef noodle soup-served with piles of fresh mint and Thai basil. The crispy duck was another firm favourite washed down with a Saigon beer costing a mere 20p.
Although it rained occasionally, affording us the excuse to nip into a coffee shop and sample some delicious coffee, it was great just strolling along the tree lined boulevards trying to dodge the crazy traffic. There are around 4 million motorbikes here and …
We visited the War Remnants Museum. It was an interesting way to pass the afternoon checking out the old American machines of war and gaining an insight to the Vietnamese perspective on the war. We also made it out to the Chu Ci Tunnels where we climbed into the foxholes and tunnels that some of the VC lived and fought in. I spent 2 minutes in one of the shallower tunnels and still can’t imagine how they endured the months or days that they did.
